“SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING CAN BE FUN FOR EVERYONE.” Do you agree with this idea? We do. And that is why we offer our Adaptive Ski and Snowboard Program. We love skiing and snowboarding and believe that everyone can have a lot of fun on skis or boards even with a disability. People with special needs can benefit from our help in learning how to enjoy winter sports- in the same way a beginner learns how to slide the slope for the first time. This requires special techniques, patience and equipment and we are here to help you learn all of the techniques so you can share your passion with everyone. You will be surprised at how much fun you can have skiing on one ski or on a sit-ski, and how amazing
it can be to teach and share your knowledge with others.
The goal of the Adaptive Instructor Program is to acquire the skills necessary to meet the Adaptive Ski Instructor qualifications of Canada - mainly attaining Level I and/or Level II CADS. You will learn how to help and teach people with special needs while, at the same time, improving your own ski/ snowboard skills. Students receive classroom instruction as well as on-mountain instruction to improve riding/skiing techniques and teaching methodologies for people with special needs. Teaching methods, video analysis, classroom management, safety and ski/ snowboard instruction with a focus on teaching people with special needs are all part of the course. The students take part in training classes to improve physical strength and balance and many hours are spent working on ski techniques as the students are working closely with our instructor programs and have to pass CSIA/CASI and improve their own ski/ snowboard skills.
A good instructor has a lot of patience, understands safety and organ
izes his class and lesson to meet specific needs of his clients. Our Adaptive Instructor Program promotes all of these components and, thanks to our qualified staff, has been really successful. Our program instructors come with many years of experience in the ski industry and are from all over the world. They spend many hours working with our students and helping them to become good leaders and instructors. Our school also works together with Whistler Blackcomb Ski School to provide our students with practical experience after finishing their certifications.
The adaptive program is one or two years in length and covers all aspects needed for our students to improve their riding/skiing skills, communication as well as their ability to teach people with special needs.
At CSBA, the summer season is a time to gain flexibility and strength for the coming winter and classes such as inline skating and mountain biking are offered. There is also more time for indoor study, so clases such a sport theory are offered to give students a solid background before the winter training.
Summertime offers countless opportunities to discover the amazing environment surrounding Whistler. Moreover, we conduct lessons in Standard First Aid, team building, and offer several hiking and overnight trips to make the experience true to life.
Even in summer, there are opportunities to ski on the glacier and we have 4 extra weeks of skiing during the summertime. Gym training at Meadow Park Sports Center is important part of a student’s progression and building the fitness level needed for the long winter.
The winter is a much longer season and most of the time we are skiing/ riding all day long, practicing our skills and enjoying fresh snow under the close watch of our instructors. Even though training is so much fun, we need a little bit of relax time as well. That is why we offer an avalanche course and winter expedition to practice our avalanche skills with overnight camping in the back country.
To help our students gain as much experience as possible, our academy can provide assistance to get you a work permit for the period of your study.
